A Manifesto for Business Improvement

Way back in 2007 my business partner, Clive Birnie, started blogging about random business stuff that came into his head under the title Positive Churn. “Cathartic” was his take on the process.

Many of the ideas he outlined came from both of our experiences running businesses prior to the Management Buyout of Severn Delta, which we had executed in 2003. In our previous lives we’d never had full authority to put them into practice, but once we were in total control we used the ’laboratory’ that was our newly formed, and struggling, business to test many of our theories out.

Given the many challenges we faced you could say it was the ultimate test of what we believed, and we were taking the phrase “Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is” to its logical conclusion.

In the intervening years I’ve not changed my view that we were on the right track. Our success in fiercely competitive markets, the resilience of the business to survive difficult times, and the fact we are still around and prospering 16 years later bears this out, I believe.

So, having found that the fundamental “Rules” still apply, even after all this time, I thought I’d have a go at revisiting them. For the sake of good order they are:

  1. You Can’t Grow Your Way Out Of A Hole
  • Cash Belongs In The Bank Not In The Warehouse
  • Variable Labour Cost Does Not Exist
  • Don’t Let Your Overheads Grow Faster Than Your Business
  • Cash IS King
  • Business is Marketing / Marketing is Business

As a first step I’ll be republishing some of Clive’s original posts (abridged) over the next few weeks. From there I’ll expand on some of the themes with more detailed posts.
